Demag Cranes' innovative training concept wins coveted IBJ Award in the People Development category

In mid-November 2011, Demag Cranes was presented with a coveted prize awarded annually by the internationally respected "International Bulk Journal" (IBJ) in the category entitled "The People Development Award (Cargo Handling)". The IBJ Award was presented as a result of the intensive training concept for crane drivers that replaces cost and time-intensive training on a crane owner's own machines on-site. The IBJ Awards have been presented since 2009 and are felt worldwide to be one of the most sought-after prizes in the bulk materials handling industry.

The award-winning concept was developed by the Services division of Demag Cranes together with the OCHA Training Centre based in the Port of Antwerp and provides crane drivers with the same knowledge and practical skills within three weeks as they could acquire over several months using conventional training methods. This generates a number of advantages for customers: since crane drivers work faster and more productively after such a training course, they achieve improved handling rates and boost income. At the same time, significant cost savings can be realised since the handling company's own cranes do not have to be made available for the training course and the time spent by the crane drivers off the job is considerably reduced. From the point of view of the crane drivers themselves, the training course enables them to use the cranes far more proficiently which, in turn, reduces stress and increases motivation.

Additional information:
Each training course is individually tuned to the specific needs of the customer and is both all-encompassing and practically orientated. That applies to both the hands-on training on a Gottwald HMK 260 E Mobile Harbour Crane dedicated to training purposes and to the preceding theoretical training sessions which take place in a crane cab simulator using original Gottwald crane controls. In the simulator, participants can realistically practice handling all kinds of standard cargoes in every conceivable scenario, such as working at night, in poor weather conditions and emergency situations, so that crane drivers are prepared for every situation in their day-to-day work. Where requested, these skills can be enhanced through a further advanced training course, which also takes place in Antwerp.

Through its Services segment, the Group provides a full range of services to enable customers to gain the most benefit from their machines by performing maintenance and refurbishment on customers' cranes and hoists. As well as such standard services as spare parts, fault remedying, maintenance and repair, more emphasis is being placed on consultancy services and training courses to enable optimum use of crane systems. Refurbishments and upgrades are performed on both standard products and complex tailor-made solutions. The company's service agreements cover basic, repeated inspections through to preventative maintenance and full-service machinery maintenance and repair. These services are offered to customers not merely for Demag Cranes' own products and installations but also for industrial crane products and third-party machines and related equipment. Using such state-of-the-art technical solutions as teleservice, customers can be offered services tailored exactly to their needs and the state of the machinery.

With more than 660,000 electric cranes and hoists installed all over the world, the Group has the largest installed base. The Services division contacts customers direct and service work is performed by the company's own qualified staff.

The Services segment generated revenue of around EUR 334 million in the 2010/2011 financial year.
