Demag Cranes expands deployment of Process Cranes for refuse incineration facilities in China

Demag Cranes has received orders for the delivery of a total of 12 fully and semi-automated Process Cranes to be used in refuse incineration facilities in China. All of the cranes will be used to serve refuse bunkers including preparation of the refuse and for feeding the incineration lines. Besides the facilities in the economic centres Shanghai, Tianjin and Shenzhen, the new refuse incineration plant in Laogang (Shanghai municipality), which will be the largest of its kind in the world, will also benefit from state-of-the-art Demag Process Crane engineering.

Demag cranes help to protect the environment
In recent years, China has been confronted with growing quantities of refuse. By utilising the energy released during the incineration process to generate electricity, the country is making an important contribution towards protection of the environment. Stocks of fossil fuels are spared and, at the same time, CO2 emissions are reduced.

Power generated by refuse incineration
The refuse incineration facilities are part of a major effort by the most highly populated country in the world to avoid landfill sites and, at the same time, to utilise the constantly increasing amounts of refuse in the most efficient and environmentally sustainable way. Domestic and commercial refuse is used as fuel for waste-energy installations, which deliver electricity to domestic and industrial consumers.

The crane installations will provide a key function at the very beginning of the process chain, making a decisive contribution towards ensuring that the required quantity of fuel is prepared and correspondingly made available to the furnaces. In this way, Demag Process Cranes play a decisive role in power generation by refuse incineration plants in China.

Demag crane engineering for the world's largest refuse incineration plant of tomorrow
Demag Cranes has received an order to supply the crane systems for the Laogang refuse incineration plant from Shanghai Laogang Comprehensive Waste Development Ltd. In its first phase of development, this plant, which is located close to the industrial centre Shanghai, will be built with four incineration lines in which up to 3,600 tonnes of refuse are to be incinerated every day. To achieve this, four automated Process Cranes will operate around the clock, seven days per week without the need for a crane operator, to ensure that the furnaces are reliably supplied with fuel in future. In the medium term, capacity is planned to be doubled, which, according to the owner, would result in the largest refuse incineration plant in the world with an incineration capacity of well over 2 million tonnes per year.

Scanner technology ensures constantly high handling rates in fully automated operation
The four Process Cranes included in this order will each have a span of 33.3 meters, load capacities of 18 tonnes and low-maintenance multi-jaw grabs that each have a capacity of 12 m3. Each of the cranes will handle more than 1,800 tonnes during clearing and blending operations and to feed the incineration furnaces, every day. These very high handling rates are achieved by high operating speeds (long travel up to 100 m/min, cross travel up to max. 80 m/min and lifting up to 100 m/min), the use of state-of-the-art scanner systems and the Demag active load-sway damping system for smooth operation.

With its new generation of automated crane installations, Demag Cranes offers its customers reliable engineering for automatic 24/7 operation. Particularly thanks to the scanner-based permanent measurement of the fill levels in the refuse bunkers, the cranes can operate at continuously high speeds and consequently achieve maximum handling rates.

Crane systems with implemented storage strategies
Demag Cranes was also awarded the contract to supply four Process Cranes for the major BaoAn II project. After the owner Shenzhen Energy Environment Co Ltd. had already decided in favour of Demag cranes for BaoAN I and was highly satisfied thanks to their reliable operation, Demag Cranes was also the first choice when the follow-up order was placed.

The construction plans for BaoAn II include an installation with two refuse bunkers which will be used for the incineration of at least 1 million tonnes of refuse per year. The installation comprises four incineration lines with four identical Process Cranes, which will be used in 24/7 automatic operation without the need for a crane operator. Fitted with 10 m3 grabs, the cranes have a span dimension of 35 metres. This installation is also equipped with state-of-the-art scanner systems and active load-sway damping, which enables the specified handling rate of up to 140 tonnes per hour to be achieved by each crane. To ensure a continuous supply to the furnaces, Demag Cranes integrates configurable storage strategies into the crane control systems. These make sure that the best possible blend of materials is mixed to ensure homogenous incineration. Further strategies are designed to ensure that the refuse chutes are provided with an optimum feed level for the individual incineration lines, for example.

Semi-automated cranes combine the benefits of manual and automated operation
Demag Cranes will deliver four semi-automated crane installations for two further refuse incineration plants. The contract for Tianjin near the capital Peking was awarded by Tianjin Binhai Environmental Industry Development Ltd. Both of the 12.5 tonne cranes have a span of 38 metres and are each fitted with an 8 m3 grab. Demag Cranes will supply two further semi-automated Process Cranes to Shanghai Jinshan Biomax Green Energy Co Ltd. for the Jinshan refuse incineration plant in Shanghai.

For these two specific applications, semi-automated crane installations are the ideal solution. They combine the owner's requirement for manual operation of the cranes with the benefits of automated operation, which also facilitates precise positioning of the cranes as well as optimum filling of the chutes.
